Professionally focused video editing app

DaVinci Resolve is a professionally-focused video-editing software developed by Blackmagic Design. The multimedia app offers a wealth of features catering to both experts and aspiring creators alike. Despite being pitched for professionals, this app offers free download. The app offers depth and complexity for users who are serious about video editing.

All-in-one video editor

DaVinci Resolve is the sole editor that combines professional 8K editing, color correction, visual effects, and audio post-production packaged in one program. Thus, it allows you to switch between editing swiftly, and dealing with color, effects, and audio control panels with just one click. Both the free and paid versions come with plenty of transitions, with all the kinds of fades and wipes that you can link to your clips. There are even shape-based fades that you can use for more creativity and a cool feature called Fusion.

The Fusion area is full of special effects. These have several settings that you can combine in different ways. However, this isn't layer-based but node-based. It may be incredibly powerful, but it takes a while to get used to it. The app's color correction and grading tools are also commendable. Unlike other programs, DaVinci Resolve gives you controls to tune colors yourself. You can draw an area on the video to have different color settings. You can split the screen effects or have different color gradings in one video.

Fairlight is another tool, letting you edit audio—with an internal sound library, automatic dialogue replacement, sound normalization, and 3D audio. Finally, there's Deliver, which lets you choose the format you'd like to export your project as. The app offers default presets, such as Youtube, Vimeo, or ProRes. However, there's no option to send your finished video to any video-sharing sites directly. DaVinci Resolve supports a huge range of formats. It's also great for Final Cut Pro and Premiere XML. However, it doesn't burn to disc.

Takes time to get used to

DaVinci Resolve offers a wide selection of functions that can rival other post-production apps. It also has a slick and well-designed look that has a professional feel to it. However, there is a lot to get grips with the app. The app is a professional editing suite, so amateur users will need to take some time to learn how the app works. Compared to Adobe Premiere or FinalCut, this app is more intimidating. Moreover, the interface is pretty packed.

At times, its UI resembles a science laboratory with all sorts of buttons and graphs on display. To help users get the most out of the app, DaVinci Resolve provides a reference manual. Although, it is a staggeringly large document that runs to almost 3,000 pages. However, reading the document will prove to be effective as it answers most of your questions. If you don't want to read lengthy documents, there are also tutorial videos available.

Performance-wise, DaVinci Resolve is generally responsive. Its speed is also respectable. However, it is not the snappiest tool. Moreover, it renders faster when there is less action in the video. There is also a minor bug issue where it mixes up names of renamed videos in the render queue.

Top-tier video editor

DaVinci Resolve is a video editing software for users serious about video editing. It is a complete app that is capable of meeting all your editing needs. Moreover, it provides a granular level of control over things so that you can create videos according to your vision. However, there are still some areas where the software feels a little rough around the edges. It will also take time to learn how to get the most out of the app. Still, this app is a worthy alternative to popular editors in the market.
